Election to Council of a professional staff member

Call for Nominations

The term of office for Mrs Megan Easton, the current professional staff member on the ANU Council, will end on 25 May 2026.

This means we must now commence preparation to hold an election for one member of the professional staff of the University to become a member on the ANU Council. The member elected will hold office for a term of two years commencing 26 May 2026 and until 25 May 2028.

The ANU Council is the governing body of the University. The role of the ANU Council and its committees is to ensure effective overall governance and management of the University.

There are currently 15 positions on the ANU Council, consisting of the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, seven external members appointed by the Federal Minister for Education, members elected by the academic and professional staff and members elected by undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Chair of the Academic Board is a non-voting member of the ANU Council.

INVITATION TO NOMINATE

The 2026 election of a member of Council by the professional staff of the University will be held in accordance with the Australian National University Act 1991, the Australian National University (Governance) Statute 2024 and the Governance Rule 2023.

Nominations for one member of the professional staff of the University to be elected to the ANU Council will be open from Tuesday 10 March 2026.

For the purpose of this election, a member of the professional staff, as defined in the Governance Rule 2023, is a person holding a full-time or part-time standard or fixed term professional staff appointment in the University on payday 26 February 2026 and who was paid a salary by the University on that day.

If you are interested in finding out more about what a role on the Council involves, an information session will be held about the Council, what it means to be a Council member and the election process, on Tuesday 17 March 2026 at 10.30am by Zoom. Interested staff members are encouraged to attend. Registration for the briefing session can be made via email to returning.officer@anu.edu.au.  A link for the session will be shared with all registered attendees.

A nomination form must be signed by two persons eligible to vote in the election (other than the candidate) and must contain the signed consent of the candidate to the nomination. Copies of the nomination form are available via the link at the top of this page. Completed nominations should be emailed to returning.officer@anu.edu.au.

Nominations will close strictly at 5.00pm Wednesday 25 March 2026.

If there is more than one nomination, an election ballot will be held. Should an election be required, voting links will be issued on Monday 30 March 2026.
