Professor Imogen Mitchell is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health and Medicine) in the Education Portfolio at the Australian National University (ANU). She is a clinician, educator and health system leader with extensive experience across intensive care medicine, medical education and health services research.
She previously served as Dean of the Medical School at the ANU, where she led major reforms to the medical program, including the development of a new pre-medicine pathway, revised MD learning outcomes and the introduction of regular curriculum review. During the COVID-19 pandemic she established Operation Graduate, enabling final-year medical students to complete their training and graduate despite disruptions to clinical placements.
Professor Mitchell has also held senior leadership roles in the health sector, including Executive Director of Education, Research and Academic Partnerships and Clinical Director for the ACT COVID-19 Response, where she led rapid evidence generation to inform decision-making and contributed to the development of the ACT ethical decision-making framework.
Her work in patient deterioration and end-of-life care has influenced clinical practice and policy, including work led by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. In 2013 she was awarded a Harkness Fellowship for Health Policy and Practice and in 2022 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to intensive care medicine and higher education.
