Trans rights are human rights, and human rights are at the heart of democracy.

IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia), marks the date in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the WHO Classification of Diseases. It is an annual day of action, and an opportunity to affirm your support for the LGBTIQA+ community. The theme of IDAHOBIT for 2026 is "At the heart of democracy".

This year at ANU, we are running an email signature campaign with the statement: "Trans rights are human rights, and human rights are at the heart of democracy."

Recent years have seen a ramp up of anti-trans rhetoric and policies, as trans rights are rolled back in many places around the globe, including Australia. It has become increasingly important to stand alongside our trans and gender diverse (TGD) friends, colleagues and students while many in the community are feeling worn down and unsafe.

We are calling on staff and students at ANU to add our signature block (see below preview) to your email signature for the month of May, as a simple but effective way to affirm your support for your TGD peers.

to download your signature block (or click the button in the top right of this page). Once you have added the image to your email signature in Outlook, tell your friends, classmates and colleagues to do the same!
